  1. Berkeley Systems have published a list of known After Dark problems
  2. (see below);   Please note that After Dark 3.0 appears to have SERIOUS
  3. conflicts with At Ease, KidDesk, Norton Backup, and the Geoport.

  6. The document below details a number of known and suspected conflicts
  7. between After Dark 3.0 and other software.  It appeared in CompuServe's
  8. forum for Berkeley Systems on Friday, Sept 16 (at the same time as the
  9. After Dark 3.0 Programming Kit showed up there).  It is quite possible
  10. that it was originally made available on Apple's eWorld.

  13. Berkeley Systems has created a mailing list to announce and distribute
  14. 'quick fix' updaters - if you own After Dark 3.0, I strongly recommend
  15. getting on that list. Details below.

  44. Since the release of After Dark 3.0 for Macintosh, users like you have
  45. sent us numerous reports of conflicts with other software programs.
  46. We have been able to verify several of these reported conflicts and
  47. have passed this information on to our Software Development team. It is
  48. our mission to help you resolve these conflicts as soon as possible so
  49. you can fully enjoy your copy of After Dark 3.0. Therefore, we will provide
  50. a fix for most if not all of these bugs in the near future.

  69. Problem:  Sleep Corner, Hot Key, & Sleep in Minutes Won't Work
  70.  
  71.             * Snap (CDEV, Part of InTouch)
  72.  
  73. Symptom: The Sleep Corner, Hot Key, or Sleep In  minutes does not work. 
  74. Fix: Remove Snap from the Control Panels folder
  75. Status: We are testing to see if upgrading to Intouch 2.1.1 will solve the
  76. problem.

  78.                 * At Ease 1.0
  79.  
  80. Symptoms: If you switch to Finder, AD won't go to sleep with corner or
  81. time-out, and the hot key freezes the system
  82. Fix: Upgrade to At Ease 2.0.
  83. Status: Testing
  84.  
  85.                 * KidDesk 1.1
  86.  
  87. Symptoms: If you start up into KidDesk, then quit to Finder, AD won't sleep
  88. and Hot Key hangs.
  89. Work around: Set KidDesk's Startup Option (menu option) to start up into
  90. Finder, then launch KidDesk manually; make alias of a kid's file (NOT the
  91. CD Application Icon) and put in Startup Items.

  94. * System 7.5's Apple menus Options Control Panel & Norton 3.0's FileSaver
  95.  
  96. Symptoms: After Dark will try to engage but will not be able to. You'll see
  97. the icons flash for a second as After Dark attempts to come on.
  98. Work Around: Open the Apple menus Options Control Panel and deselect the 
  99. "Remember Recently Used Items" checkbox.
  100. Status: Testing

  105. Problem:        "X" Through the After Dark Icon during Start Up
  106.  
  107.                * Disk Doubler:
  108.  
  109. Symptoms:After Dark doesn't load at startup and won't open when clicked on.
  110. Work around:  Turn 32-bit addressing on. To do this, open the Memory Control
  111. Panel and switch 32-bit addressing from "off" to "on."  (This should not
  112. affect anything adversely except old software which is not "32-bit clean."
  113. If you are not sure if a piece of software is "32-bit clean" contact its
  114. manufacturer.) Restart the Macintosh and After Dark will load up properly.
  115. If your Mac does not have 32-bit addressing capabilities, contact Apple and 
  116. ask for the 32-bit Enabler.
  117. If for some reason you do not want to turn 32-bit addressing, make AD load
  118. before DD by making an alias of After Dark, leaving the After Dark alias in
  119. the Control Panels folder and putting After Dark itself in Extensions folder
  120. Status: In communication with Symantec for fix.

  123.                 * Intermission
  124.  
  125. Symptom: "X" Through the After Dark Icon during Start Up or Locking up and
  126. Freezing
  127. Fix: Remove Intermission INIT
  128. Status: None, Incompatible with other Screen Savers
  129.  
  130.               * Incompatible Mac
  131.  
  132. Symptom: "X" Through the After Dark Icon during Start Up (Plus, SE, Classic,
  133. PB 100 and Portable), or crash during startup immediately after installation.
  134. Fix: Don't try and install it on these Macs.
  135. Status: None, will not work on these machines.

  137.              * Central Point Anti-Virus:

  139. Work Around: 
  140. Symptom: Move After Dark to Extensions folder so it loads before CP. Or turn
  141. off CPAV'S option to scan the System Folder at Start Up.
  142. Status: Testing

  144.             * Memory Manager: (ShareWare)
  145.  
  146. Work Around: Remove it; Reversing Load order might help.
  147. Status: It's possible we may plan to deal with this in a later version, but
  148. not likely at this time.

  153. Problem:                After Dark & SAM / Norton Utilities 3.0

  155.                * SAM 3.5 & 4.0:

  157. Symptom: When After Dark activates for the first time, 5 minutes or by using
  158. the Sleep Corner, the SAM alert dialogue box comes on the screen. The User
  159. cannot click on the Dialogue Buttons and the Screen is temporarily frozen.
  160. It is not a permanent freeze
  161. Work Around:  Allow the SAM Alert Box to go away on its own. The time may
  162. vary, since it is a prefrence set in SAM.
  163. Systems: Still following up on this.

  165.                * Norton Backup:
  166.  
  167. Symptom: NB is prevented from being able to backup the HD if After Dark 3.0
  168. is running at the time
  169. Status: In communication with Symantec for fix.

  174. Problem:        Crash at Start Up  / "Unimplemented Trap"

  179. Possible Fix: Upgrade to CDU 1.0.4
  180. Status: Still following up on this.

  182.         * CPU: (Connectix Powerbook Utilities)

  184. Symptom: Crash at Start Up / "Unimplemented Trap"
  185. Possible Fix: Upgrade to Current version 2.0.4

  191. Problem:        Crash with Notifier, Mail, Calendar, & Fax Programs

  196. plays sound when when received. 
  197. Work Around: Don't use Demo mode, and turn MS Mail's sound notification off.
  198. Status: Is being addressed in Fix.
  199.  
  200.                   * CC Mail
  201.  
  202. Sympton: If mail plays sound when when received. 
  203. Work Around: Turn MS Mail's sound notification off.
  204. Status: Is being addressed in Fix.
  205.  
  206.                * Now Up-to-Date
  207.  
  208. Sympton: Can't notify or chime when After Dark is in Sleep Mode. 
  209. Work Around: None at this time
  210. Status:  Now Software is testing; in progress
  211.  
  212.                 * Alarm Clock
  213.  
  214. Sympton: If After Dark is sleeping, the Alarm Clock won't go off and wake
  215. After Dark up, but rather waits until you wake up After Dark.

  218.                 * Easy Alarms

  220. Sympton: When After Dark is asleep at the time an Alert should come up,
  221. the Alert dialogue punches through the After Dark Screen, then the System
  222. Freezes.
  223. Status: Still verifying

  226.                * GeoPort Adapter on AV
  227.  
  228. Sympton: While receiving Fax via the AV's GeoPort Modem Adapter. Produces
  229. System hang.
  230. Work Around: Turn After Dark Off, or try using the no Sleep Corner to
  231. temporarily deactivate After Dark.
  232. Status: Verifying and Testing

  237. Problem:                Type 1 Error, Error 32 / Installer Crash

  243. Shift key held down (unless you are installing from the After Dark CD).

  248. Symptom: After using disk 1, ejects it, asks for disk 1 again; insert 1 or 2,
  249. system hangs.
  250. Work Around: Starting up with Extensions Off is known to solve this problem
  251. for sure.

  254.      * MYOB: Mind Your Own Business (an accounting spreadsheet).

  256. Symptom: Type 1 Errors when After Dark is woken up; Quits MYOB
  257. Work Around:  Still verifying.

  260.                * Disk Lock 3.0
  261.  
  262. Symptom: Possible crash
  263. Fix: Don't use After Dark as the optional screen
  264. Status: In communication with Symantec for fix.

  272.  
  273. Symptom: Does not play in random order.
  274. Fix: 2.0 versions of Randomizer & MultiModule should be deleted.

  277.              * Marbles under MultiModule
  278.  
  279. Symptom: Marbles crash when run under MultiModule with the password feature
  280. on Workaround: Turn password off or don't use Marbles under MultiModule
  281. Status: Testing
  282.  
  283.           * Pearls module (from the Art of Darkness)
  284.  
  285. Symptom: Crashes immediately under After Dark 3.0
  286. Fix: Upgrade will be available on CD and addressed in Fix.
  287. Status: Testing
  288.  
  289.                  * System IQ
  290.  
  291. Symptom: Sleeps over downloads; even with System IQ on, AD3 goes to sleep
  292. over downloads; most commonly America Online, but others, too
  293. Work around: Crank up delay or put mouse in the sleep never corner
  294. Status: Testing new Sys IQ settings
  295.  
  296.                  * Installer
  297.  
  298. Symptom: Installer puts files in the wrong places; e.g. puts After Dark
  299. Files in System Folder (root); puts After Dark 3.0 (module)  on hard disk
  300. Fix: Boot off of Disk Tools, run Disk First Aid, then re-install After Dark
  301.  
  302.                * Artist module
  303.  
  304. Symptom: Some PICTs crash the Artist; seems to be JPEG-compressed PICTs
  305. Status: Testing; if you have PICTS that crash, please send them to us.
  306.  
  307.               * DrawMorph module
  308.  
  309. Symptom: If SAM is installed, can't Edit a Morph, as it says there's not
  310. enough memory.  Morph will run, just not edit.
  311. Work around:  Remove SAM temporarily, create/edit your morphs, then 
  312. reinstall SAM, since you can run the morphs, you just can't edit them.
  313. Status: In communication with Symantec for fix.
